At Coral Care, we make it easy to connect with local pediatric occupational therapists for in-home appointments for your child in two weeks or less. Our providers are experts at working with children, whether that means teaching them to self-regulate or socialize with their friends, working on their motor skills, and much more!
Occupational therapists can help a child's motor skills, which directly affects their typical day. This includes simple things like writing, eating, brushing teeth, tying shoes, getting dressed, and more. Improved motor skills can also lead to improved self-confidence.
Children often have difficulty with expressing themselves in a healthy manner. OTs can help your child learn healthy method of self-regulation to navigate a variety of feelings and situations.
Every child is unique so a learning style that works for one child may not work for another. From the playground to the classroom, an OT can help equip your child to learn and engage in school.
Play is always an important part of a child's life! Playing with others is especially vital to a child's development. Occupational therapists can help children learn how to play and communicate well with others, including valuable social and communication skills.
Children need their parents. But as they age and mature, they must learn how to do basic tasks on their own. Occupational therapy can help your child learn how to succeed in activities that they may struggle with and give them the independence they seek.
Learn about the process of pediatric occupational therapy, from initial evaluation to ongoing care and therapy sessions.
This is a time for your OT to meet your child and assess any issues they may be having. You should be present the whole time and can give information regarding medical history, milestones, difficulties, etc.
Depending on age, your occupational therapist may play games with your child to help get them to engage. Play is a great tool for pediatric occupational therapists because it helps make the evaluation and follow-up sessions fun, while the games will also help your specialist evaluate for any delays, disorders, or other issues.
During the evaluation remember that you are encouraged to be present and ask questions! We highly encourage parents to be involved in the process as that typically leads to better outcomes.
After the evaluation your OT will discuss their findings with you and propose a treatment plan. This will often include recommended goals, session frequency, duration of treatment, and even referrals for other treatment if speech therapy won't address the concerns highlighted.
Your Coral Care OT will work with you to schedule regular at-home sessions depending on your availability. At-home treatments tend to work best for both the patient and provider and can fit seamlessly into your day.
The actual session activities will vary depending on your child's age and specific needs. For younger children the sessions may include games and exercises that pertain to the specific goals of those sessions.
Your occupational therapist will also probably give you exercises you can do with your child to help encourage more practice and improvement! It can take some time to see progress, however if you stay consistent with your sessions and regularly do at-home exercises with your child, you will see improvements.
