At Coral Care, we make it easy to connect with local pediatric physical therapists for in-home appointments for your child in two weeks or less. Our providers are experts at working with children, including teaching them gross motor skills or managing chronic illnesses or disorders.
For young children, missing key milestones like crawling, walking, jumping, even holding a pencil are all concerns that a physical therapist can help with.
If your toddler often complains of pain or discomfort, they may require physical therapy. This can help address muscle weakness or tightness, neurological issues, or simple balance and coordination.
Just like adults, if a child has an injury they may need to use standard physical therapy techniques to get back to regain full coordination and strength!
Gross motor skills involve larger muscle groups and include movements like running, jumping, and generally playing. If your child is having difficulty performing these activities, it could indicate that they could use physical therapy to improve their physical abilities.
Physical therapy can help address general balance and coordination issues, which will impact other parts of their life. If you are worried that your child is stumbling, falling, or bumping into things frequently they may require physical therapy to improve their coordination in general.
Learn about the process of pediatric physical therapy, from initial evaluation to ongoing care and therapy sessions.
This is a time for your PT to meet your child and assess any issues they may be having. You should be present the whole time and can give information regarding medical history, milestones, difficulties, etc.
Depending on age, your physical therapist may play games with your child to help get them to engage. Play is a great tool for pediatric physical therapists because it helps make the evaluation and follow-up sessions fun, while the games will also help your specialist evaluate for any delays, disorders, or other issues.
During the evaluation and during ongoing sessions, remember that you are encouraged to be present and ask questions! We highly encourage parents to be involved in the process as that typically leads to better outcomes.
After the evaluation your PT will discuss their findings with you and propose a treatment plan. This will often include recommended goals, session frequency, duration of treatment, and even referrals for other treatment if speech therapy won't address the concerns highlighted.
Your Coral Care PT will work with you to schedule regular at-home sessions depending on your availability. At-home treatments tend to work best for both the patient and provider and can fit seamlessly into your day.
The actual session activities will vary depending on your child's age and specific needs. For younger children the sessions may include games and exercises that pertain to the specific goals of those sessions.
Your physical therapist will also probably give you exercises you can do with your child to help encourage more practice and improvement! It can take some time to see progress, however if you stay consistent with your sessions and regularly do at-home exercises with your child, you will see improvements.
