Speech therapy qualifies as an approved TEFA expense
Under Texas Education Freedom Accounts, educational therapies is an approved expense category. Speech-language therapy provided by a licensed SLP who is registered as an approved TEFA vendor qualifies under this category.
This matters most for two groups of families: children who have speech and language delays or disorders listed in their IEP, and families whose children are working on language, articulation, fluency, or feeding skills outside of a formal IEP. If the therapist is TEFA-approved, the sessions are a covered expense.
The key requirement is vendor approval. You can't use TEFA funds with just any speech therapist. The provider needs to be listed as an approved vendor in the Odyssey marketplace.
What speech therapy covers for kids with IEPs
For children who qualify for the $30,000 TEFA tier, speech therapy is often one of the primary services specified in the IEP. Common goals include:
Expressive language. Building vocabulary, sentence structure, and the ability to communicate thoughts, needs, and ideas. A core goal for many children with autism, developmental delays, and language processing disorders.
Receptive language. Understanding what others say — following directions, answering questions, and processing spoken language accurately.
Articulation and phonology. Producing speech sounds correctly. Many children with speech delays have difficulty with specific sounds or sound patterns that make their speech hard to understand.
Social communication (pragmatics). Using language in social contexts — taking turns in conversation, reading social cues, understanding implied meaning. A significant focus for children on the autism spectrum.
Fluency. SLPs work with children and families on strategies to improve fluency and reduce the anxiety that often accompanies stuttering.
Feeding and oral motor skills. Picky eating, food texture aversions, and swallowing difficulties often have an oral motor component that a pediatric SLP is trained to address.
Why in-home speech therapy works well with TEFA
Skills generalize better when they're practiced in the environments where they're actually used. When an SLP comes to your child's home, they work with the real objects, routines, and people that make up your child's daily life. They can coach parents in real time, practice language during snack time or play, and work on the specific communication challenges that come up in your actual environment.
For children who struggle with transitions, have sensory sensitivities, or get dysregulated in unfamiliar settings, in-home therapy removes a significant barrier. TEFA funds can pay for in-home speech therapy sessions with a licensed, TEFA-approved SLP.

Frequently asked questions
Does the speech therapist need to be TEFA-approved, or just licensed?
Both. The therapist needs to be a licensed SLP and also registered as an approved vendor in the Odyssey marketplace.
My child's school provides speech therapy. Can I use TEFA to add more?
TEFA funds cannot be used while a child is enrolled full-time in a Texas public school. If your child attends a participating private school or is homeschooled, TEFA can fund private OT to supplement what the school setting provides.
We're working on feeding issues. Does that qualify?
Feeding therapy provided by a licensed SLP with a pediatric feeding specialty can qualify as an educational therapy under TEFA. Coral Care's SLPs include providers with feeding therapy experience.
What if our award comes through and we haven't booked yet?
You don't have to wait for July 1. Coral Care works with most major insurance plans, so if your child has coverage, you can begin sessions now. Use code TEFA for $100 off your first evaluation. Getting your evaluation done before July means you're ready to roll into regular sessions the moment funds hit.
