What Is a Pediatric Therapy Evaluation and What Should I Expect?

You've decided to get your child evaluated. For many families, the evaluation is the most uncertain part of the whole process. This guide answers the key questions for speech, OT, and PT evaluations so you can walk in prepared.

Why the Evaluation Matters

An evaluation establishes a detailed baseline of your child's current abilities, identifies specific areas of strength and challenge, produces specific measurable therapy goals, and generates documentation that supports insurance coverage and school services.

What Happens During a Speech-Language Evaluation

A speech-language evaluation typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes and includes a parent interview, standardized assessments comparing your child's skills to age norms, and play-based observation of natural communication.

What Happens During an OT Evaluation

An OT evaluation covers a parent interview, standardized assessments of motor skills and sensory processing, observation of play and daily tasks, and an environmental assessment. Because Coral Care OTs work in your home, they observe the actual environment your child navigates every day.

What Happens During a PT Evaluation

A PT evaluation includes a parent interview, standardized motor assessments measuring gross motor skills, strength, gait, and range of motion, and functional movement observation.

After the Evaluation

The therapist produces a written report within one to two weeks covering assessment findings, standardized scores, eligibility determination, specific therapy goals, and treatment frequency recommendations.
